BJERRE SWEATS ON SGP SPOT

BJERRE SWEATS ON SGP SPOT

Friday 31st August 2012, 12:35

Injured Danish racer Kenneth Bjerre hopes his solid World Championship record will be enough to earn him a wild card for the 2013 SGP series.

The Peterborough rider will spend the rest of this year on the sidelines after breaking his leg in Panthers’ clash with King’s Lynn at the East of England Showground on August 23.

This summed up what has been a nightmare season for Bjerre, who is currently 16th in the World Championship on 41 points.

His only route into the 2013 Grand Prix series is to receive one of the four permanent wild cards issued by organisers BSI Speedway and the FIM at the end of the season.

"I have been in the Grand Prix series for four years and while this season hasn’t gone well, I think I showed in the previous three years that I am good enough to be there."

Bjerre qualified for the 2009 SGP series by winning the GP Challenge at Zielona Gora in 2008 and finished eighth in his debut season. He was seventh in the 2010 and 2011 competitions and has never needed wild card assistance to keep his spot.

The Esbjerg-born man, who was replaced by Krzysztof Kasprzak in the FIM Fogo British SGP last Saturday, hopes his previous record will count in his favour when the wild cards are handed out.

He told the Peterborough Telegraph: “I have been in the Grand Prix series for four years and while this season hasn’t gone well, I think I showed in the previous three years that I am good enough to be there. I feel I deserve a wildcard and really wanted to prove that during the rest of this year.

“I always liked going to Cardiff and the next two rounds are at tracks that are usually good for me. I was hoping to score a lot of points to show I should get to stay in the series, but hopefully they will remember what I have done in the past.”
