SAYFUTDINOV ON MEDAL MISSION

Russian rocket Emil Sayfutdinov still has a World Championship medal in his sights ahead of tonight’s IPONE German SGP in Teterow.

Russian rocket Emil Sayfutdinov still has a World Championship medal in his sights ahead of tonight’s IPONE German SGP in Teterow.

The Salavat-born ace is currently seventh in the standings on 79 points – 18 short of leader Jason Doyle and 14 away from Patryk Dudek in third.

I want to win some races and win some GPs. It’s important for me. I want to do it. If we don’t make any mistakes in the semi-final, I can get to the final and fight for a place on the podium.

But with double world champion Tai Woffinden racking up 32 points in the last two rounds, there is still plenty of time for Sayfutdinov to fight his way back into the SGP medal race.

Sayfutdinov has enjoyed a consistent return to the World Championship this year, scoring double figures in six of the opening eight rounds.

But he has converted just one of these results into a podium finish, and the Leszno and Piraterna star is keen to improve that record to boost his medal hopes – starting in Teterow tonight.

He said: “I am still fighting for points and I want to be in the finals. I want to win some races and win some GPs. It’s important for me. I want to do it. If we don’t make any mistakes in the semi-final, I can get to the final and fight for a place on the podium.

“The way I’m working is to be on the podium. I want to be in the World Championship to be on the podium, but we’ll see what happens when we get to the last round in Australia.

“Speedway is so hard for everyone. But I’m working hard to find good setups and good speed and move forward.”

Sayfutdinov goes into tonight’s event, having never seen, practised on or raced the Teterow track. But with Friday’s practice cancelled due to rain, this may not put him at a disadvantage.

He said: “We will see. I don’t know this track because I have never been there, but we will see. I want to relax and enjoy it.”
