MADSEN PUZZLED BY DANISH SNUB

Danish star Leon Madsen admits he’s baffled as to why he isn’t in his national squad this year, despite starring for his country on Sunday.

Danish star Leon Madsen admits he’s baffled as to why he isn’t in his national squad this year, despite starring in Denmark’s 59-31 hammering against Poland in Czestochowa on Sunday.

Madsen scored 12 of his country’s points in the challenge match while his compatriots faltered, with Niels-Kristian Iversen and Michael Jepsen Jensen managing only four points. Peter Kildemand recorded five and Andreas Lyager failed to score, while Mikkel Michelsen registered six.

Despite appearing in the contest, Madsen says he was only there following calls from meeting organisers One Sport as he races for Czestochowa in the PGE Ekstraliga.

Hans said I am good in Poland, but that I didn't show too much internationally. That's the explanation I got. I think I just have to reconcile with him and respect Hans Nielsen's decision.

He is enjoying another strong season with the Lions and is currently ninth in the Polish league averages, with Nicki Pedersen the only Dane placed higher – another rider not included in team manager Hans Nielsen’s squad.

While Pedersen and Nielsen had a very public fall-out in 2016 over the boss’ refusal to let the triple world champion sit out Event 1 of the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup, Madsen admits he is puzzled by his omission.

He scored just six points when Denmark suffered a shock elimination in Event 2 of last year’s Monster Energy SWC at Vastervik. And Madsen fears his struggles on the international stage have counted against him.

The Polish-based racer told Sportowefakty.pl: “I do not know how to explain it myself. It is simply said that I am not very good in the international arena.

“Hans said I am good in Poland, but that I didn't show too much internationally. That's the explanation I got. I think I just have to reconcile with him and respect Hans Nielsen's decision.

“As I said: it is Nielsen who is the manager and he makes decisions and I cannot change them. I just try to do my best every time I ride for my teams. I talked to Nielsen, but that has not changed anything.”

Madsen was delighted with his efforts against the Poles – one which could prompt calls for him to be recalled to the squad and given a place in Denmark’s Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations pair next month.

He added: “I am very happy with my performance. It was a good day, but I had to work hard for those points.

“We all know that I am not in the national team of Denmark and I only competed in this competition because One Sport wanted it and I race in Czestochowa. It was nice to prove to everyone that I belong here."
