BRITISH SWITCH FOR SCHLEIN?

Australian rider Rory Schlein was tight-lipped on reports he is set to start the 2014 season on a British licence.

Australian rider Rory Schlein was tight-lipped on reports he is set to start the 2014 season on a British licence.

The King’s Lynn man has been riding in the UK since joining Edinburgh in 2001, but raced for Australia in the FIM Speedway World Cup as recently as 2011.

The Darwin-born rider was said to have declined a place in the Aussie team for last summer’s competition and has applied for an ACU licence for this season, according to Sportowefakty.pl.

It is unclear whether Schlein will enter the British Championship and attempt to qualify for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series as a Brit, or bid to represent Team GB in the Monster Energy SWC.

It is said the move will make it easier for Schlein to compete in certain German fixtures, which can be more difficult without an EU licence.

When contacted, Schlein politely declined to comment on the reports at this stage. He said: “I can’t really say much at the minute about that for a couple of reasons.

“Firstly, I’m not ready to let people know what I’m doing and nothing is 100 percent confirmed about what I’m actually doing. I probably won’t be able to say anything for another month at least.

“I’m telling everybody the same thing. I can’t really say a lot on it until I hear from the people I need to speak to.”
