Danish icon Nicki Pedersen’s FIM Speedway Grand Prix qualification hopes have suffered a serious setback after a heavy crash in Pardubice on Sunday afternoon.
Pedersen was taken to hospital with a broken No.6 vertebrae in his neck, a broken wrist, four broken ribs and concussion.
The triple world champion was racing in the famous Golden Helmet meeting and crashed out of the A Final, won by Russian racer Emil Sayfutdinov ahead of Rune Holta, Martin Smolinski, Peter Ljung and Max Fricke.
The Odense-born man carved his way through the field and was chasing hard after former world No.3 Sayfutdinov on the final lap. But he clipped his back wheel and flew over the right-hand side of the bike.
Pedersen was taken to hospital for checks, where the damage was confirmed and he now faces a race against time to be ready for the Stockholm SGP at the Friends Arena on Saturday night.
The Holsted man’s team is set to release more details on Pedersen’s injuries in the coming days.
