BECKER'S EUROPEAN DREAM

USA shooting star Luke Becker admits racing in the Monster Energy SWC has made him even hungrier to make it in Europe and find a UK club.

15 / 07 / 2017, 12:39

American shooting star Luke Becker admits being handed his Monster Energy SWC debut by Greg Hancock last year only strengthened his desire to make it in Europe as he seeks a British team for 2018.

The Californian signed off his Monster Energy SWC in sensational style at last week’s Race Off, winning heat 20 ahead of Jevgenijs Kostigovs, Vadim Tarasenko and Troy Batchelor – all of whom race regularly in the world’s top leagues.

Becker currently leads this year’s American Championship, but his only racing experience in Europe has come while representing his country.

I wouldn’t say I’m stuck in America, but the longer I am over there, I’m not gaining experience in Europe. I’m definitely trying to get over here and get on a team as soon as possible.

The 18-year-old first travelled with the USA team as reserve last year, and was promoted into the starting line-up when four-time world champion Greg Hancock withdrew for the Race Off, seeking to give youth a chance.

Becker didn’t score in Manchester that night, but underlined the progress he has made over the past 12 months in Leszno, registering four points and showing superb speed to win his final ride.

A top-four finish in his national championship would make him eligible for a visa to race in Britain. And Becker can’t wait to cross the pond as he emerges as a future star for the USA. He said: “Last year’s World Cup was the thing that really told me this is what I want to do and what I want to be.

“I wouldn’t say I’m stuck in America, but the longer I am over there, I’m not gaining experience in Europe. I’m definitely trying to get over here and get on a team as soon as possible. I’m just looking for the opportunity, to be honest.

“I don’t want to go after the first club that comes in for me. I want to get the right contract and get it right for my first year so that I don’t struggle.

“I’m not eligible right now. Last year I placed sixth in the US Championship, but I’m leading the championship by three points.

“We have three rounds to go and if I’m in the top four, then I can get that work visa. That’s the main goal right now.”
