World No.2 Bartosz Zmarzlik finished above a host of Polish sporting icons to claim sixth place in the prestigious Przeglad Sportowy Athlete of the Year poll.

Zmarzlik was speedway’s sole representative on the shortlist after racing to a career-best second place in the FIM Speedway World Championship, falling just 10 points short of becoming Poland’s third world champion.

The 2018 Adrian Flux British SGP winner also topped the PGE Ekstraliga averages for the third season running.

The poll was topped by volleyball hero Bartosz Kurek, who was named MVP in the Volleyball World Cup as Poland won the title. Kurek beat ski jumping legend Kamil Stoch into second place.

Zmarzlik had the honour of finishing ahead of 14 other athletes, including Bayern Munich and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski.

Paying tribute to those who voted for him by text and by post, Zmarzlik wrote on Facebook: “Thank you, for every devoted voice, for every SMS or coupon. Your appreciation is motivation for further lifting my skills and development.”
