SMOLINSKI STORMS INTO CHALLENGE

German ace Martin Smolinski surged closer to an FIM Speedway Grand Prix comeback after winning today's SGP qualifying semi with a maximum.

German ace Martin Smolinski surged closer to an FIM Speedway Grand Prix comeback after winning today's SGP qualifying semi with a 15-point maximum.

The Bavarian sent his home fans crazy in Abensberg as he topped the podium to book his place at the GP Challenge in Gorican on August 24, where the top three qualify for SGP 2020.

He was joined in progressing by Ukrainian international Aleksandr Loktaev and Danish champion Kenneth Bjerre. They tied on 13 points with Loktaev winning a run-off for second spot.

Finland's Timo Lahti fell just short on 11, with Pawel Przedpelski and Jurica Pavlic missing out on 10 and Vaclav Milik and Linus Sundstrom notching nine.

But Pavlic may yet appear in the GP Challenge as Croatia is guaranteed one wild-card pick and with the event on his home track - built and operated by his family - he's red-hot favourite to be selected.
