FIM Speedway of Nations winner Gleb Chugunov launched his bid to win another world title in fine style with victory at the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship opener in Lublin on Saturday.
The Wroclaw racer topped the podium on 17 points to take the series lead alongside Poland’s Dominik Kubera, who finished fourth in the final.
He dropped just a point over his opening six outings to Maksym Drabik as he bids to improve on two straight fourth place finishes in the championship.
Former champion Maksym Drabik stepped up his effort to win No.2 with 16 points – going undefeated over five heats. He was third behind Chugunov and Smektala in his semi to exit the meeting, but claimed third spot in the overall standings.
Second place on the night went to defending champion Bartosz Smektala, who scored 13 points, with SGP first reserve Robert Lambert racing to third and 14. A retirement didn’t help Lambert’s cause in the heats, but he dropped just a point from his other four rides to register 11 over five rides, before finishing second to Kubera in his semi to reach the final.
The next round takes place in Gustrow on September 14, before the series concludes in Pardubice on October 4.
