EKSTRALIGA | GORZOW SAFE AS ZMARZLIK RESTS

Gorzow defied the early withdrawal of new world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik to cement their PGE Ekstraliga status for 2020.

Gorzow defied the early withdrawal of new world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik to cement their PGE Ekstraliga status for 2020.

The Edward Jancarz Stadium side won 57-33 away to Ostrow to secure an emphatic 117-63 victory on aggregate in the promotion/relegation play-off.

Gorzow had to finish the meeting without Poland’s third world champion after Zmarzlik withdrew due to the effects of stomach flu. But he still raced to victory in both of the heats he completed.

Zmarzlik has been a busy man since his title triumph in Torun, defying his illness to make personal appearances in Gorzow and represent his country - scoring 11 points as Poland defeated the Rest of the World in Rybnik on Saturday.

With Gorzow safely through, Zmarzlik stood down from his final few outings with the backing of coach Stanislaw Chomski.

Denmark’s Anders Thomsen topped the Gorzow scorechart on 12 paid 14 points, with Krzysztof Kasprzak collecting 11 paid 13, Szymon Wozniak tallying 10 paid 11 and Peter Kildemand adding eight.

Ukrainian international Aleksandr Loktaev was Ostrow’s top performer on 13, while Tomasz Gapinski notched nine.
