SpeedwayGP followers have chosen their FIM Speedway Grand Prix Line-up of the Decade. First up, we feature Australian icon Jason Crump.

As a triple world champion, Crump goes down as his nation’s greatest speedway export and Australia’s only multi-time world champion.

But that statistic only tells a fraction of the story when it comes to his staggering SGP consistency.

Crump spent an astonishing 10 straight seasons in the SGP World Championship top three between 2001 and 2010 – matching a feat achieved by Swedish great Ove Fundin between 1956 and 1965.

JC claimed three gold medals, five silvers and two bronzes, with his title wins coming in 2004, 2006 and 2009.

After three straight seasons of silver, Crump’s maiden victory, sealed at the Norwegian SGP in Hamar on October 2, 2004, was a moment of huge celebration as the Bristol-born racer took his place atop the podium for the first time.

Crump went on to pile up 2,006 SGP points over 145 appearances on the SGP stage, winning 299 of his 822 SGP heats.

He won an incredible 23 SGP rounds – a figure that remains unsurpassed today, with Tomasz Gollob his nearest rival on 22 and current SGP star Greg Hancock on 21.

The 44-year-old showed he’s still capable of mixing it up on the shale when he came out of retirement to star for Australia in their test series against Great Britain at Perth’s Pinjar Park last weekend.

Crump remains an idol for all the generations who have followed him on to the shale from raw rookies to 2012 world champion Chris Holder and 2017 winner Jason Doyle.

JC’s final gift to Australia as a professional speedway rider was to pull Holder aside for a pep talk after a heated confrontation with Nicki Pedersen following a collision between them in the 2012 Torun SGP semi-final.

With Crump taking Holder away from the heat of battle and getting him back in the zone, the torch was passed and the Sydneysider became Australia’s fifth world champion in the re-run – with a little bit of help from champion No.4.

Crump was an overwhelming choice by fans for the SGP Line-Up of the Decade – and it’s a well-deserved accolade!
