Polish racer Maciej Janowski isn’t worried about how many riders qualify automatically for SGP 2021, insisting “we are all chasing the gold.”
The SGP Commission decided to cut the number of automatic qualification places from eight to six, setting up an even tougher fight to make it into next season’s SGP World Championship.
While the prospect of missing out on an SGP 2021 spot may be daunting for some, Janowski would much rather focus on the race for gold.
It doesn’t matter if you end up fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth; we all start from the same level and we are all chasing the gold.
Magic, who finished sixth in 2019, said: “However many riders make it into 2021, one thing that won’t change is everyone wants to win the gold medal.
“It doesn’t matter if you end up fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth; we all start from the same level and we are all chasing the gold.
"All 16 riders want to get this, so it is a very hard competition.”
Janowski is still chasing his first SGP World Championship medal, with his best performances coming in 2017 and 2018, when he finished fourth.
Asked if he can follow fellow countryman Bartosz Zmarzlik to the top of the podium this year, Magic replied: “Whatever I say now doesn’t matter. I will just try to prove my skills from the first round, be consistent, try not to get any injuries and I’ll just race and have fun.”
The stakes may be high on the SGP stage, but it’s clear Janowski is enjoying life in the World Championship. He said: “It’s great to be in Speedway Grand Prix. I really enjoy it. I have a lot of friends there and I love many things around the SGP series. It’s good fun for me and I’m happy to be there.”
