FIM track racing boss Armando Castagna tipped the Fogo FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship’s top riders for FIM Speedway Grand Prix stardom as the 2020 calendar was confirmed.
This year’s junior World Championship series will be contested over three rounds, starting at Polish track Poznan on June 27. The action moves to German venue Stralsund on September 5, before the title is decided at Czech circuit Pardubice on October 2 – the day before the SGP season finale in Torun.
Qualifiers for these rounds take place on June 6 with a meeting at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium, as well as in Latvian capital Riga and Ludwigslust in Germany.
The qualifiers will feature 54 riders – 18 in each – with the top four riders from each round advancing to the finals, along with three permanent wild cards named by the FIM U21 Commission. There will also be a wild card from the host country at each of the final rounds.
With two-time champion Maksym Drabik, Bartosz Smektala and Robert Lambert all too old to compete this year, the likes of Poland’s Dominik Kubera, Russian racer Gleb Chugunov and Britain’s Dan Bewley start as title favourites.
And Castagna believes the series is producing riders who would already feel at home racing the SGP elite.
He said: “This championship becomes stronger every year with its level increasing and some of the riders could compete without any problems in the Speedway Grand Prix already.
“The three finals are hosted in Poland, Germany and Czech Republic and every one of these countries is a breeding ground of future champions.”
