NICHOLLS LINES UP AT RESERVE FOR PANTHERS

Scott Nicholls will start the SGB Premiership as a reserve for Peterborough, but insists he isn’t planning on staying there.

Seven-time British champion Scott Nicholls will start the SGB Premiership as a reserve for Peterborough, but insists he isn’t planning on staying there.

The former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star replaces New Zealand racer Bradley Wilson-Dean, who has been forced to take time out with a shoulder injury.

Nicholls spent the second half of last year with the Panthers, but was expecting to sit out the early stages of the top-flight season.

I’m working on getting an engine that will work around Peterborough, knowing I will have a full season this time. It’s a great club to ride for and the track is superb to ride.

So he’s ready to grasp his opportunity with both hands, and while he could prove a trump card at reserve, where he will be able to take up to seven rides, he is determined to race his way into the Peterborough top five.

He said: “The side looks strong this season with plenty of quality. I think I start the season down at reserve, but the plan isn’t to stay there long. Whoever does ride at reserve will mean we should be strong all season.”

Nicholls added: “I’m delighted to be back with Peterborough this season in a team that looks so strong on paper.

“I was prepared to sit it out and just ride in the Championship and bide my time and see what comes up once the season starts.

“I feel for Bradley (Wilson-Dean) and it’s a blow for him that his season is over before it has begun but he has taken advice from his surgeon to rest and I’m sure he will come back stronger once the shoulder is properly healed.

“I had a few good scores with Peterborough last season after leaving Wolves, but if I’m honest I was playing catch up with engines after having a setup that worked around Wolves and other small tracks.

“I’m working on getting an engine that will work around Peterborough, knowing I will have a full season this time. It’s a great club to ride for and the track is superb to ride.

“The fans deserve better than what they got last season, but we had no luck at all with injuries to almost all the side at some stage or another.”
