SMOLINSKI'S SECOND CHANCE

German ace Martin Smolinski hopes his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut season stands him in good stead as he returns to the World Championship.

German ace Martin Smolinski hopes his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut season stands him in good stead as he returns to the World Championship after a five-season absence.

The Munich-born racer made his full-time SGP debut in 2014, stunning the sport when he won the season-opening New Zealand SGP in Auckland.

When you start, it’s like the first year in a new job. It’s the same in the Grand Prix. When you’re in your first year in a new job, you don’t know anyone.

While he was unable to retain his SGP spot that year, Smolinski has rarely been far away from regaining qualification. He also led Germany into their first world final of the 21st century in the 2018 Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations.

The 2018 World Longtrack champion is no stranger to mixing it with the world’s best, and after being promoted into the series following American legend Greg Hancock’s retirement, he’s confident he has the experience to improve on his 12th place in 2014.

The 35-year-old said: “My first year in Speedway Grand Prix was very hard. But I have seen the whole series now and I know all the guys.

“When you start, it’s like the first year in a new job. It’s the same in the Grand Prix. When you’re in your first year in a new job, you don’t know anyone.

“But now everything is going a good way and I feel very confident at the moment. I have quite a good back-up.

“I am very focused for the new season and I think a lot can happen. I am quite relaxed about the racing and my team is working well.

“All my sponsors are very happy about me riding in the SGP series full time. They are backing me up and this makes life much easier for me.”
