Speedway GP fans voted for their SGP Line-Up of the Decade. Today, we feature Swedish star Andreas Jonsson.

AJ made his full-time SGP debut in 2002 and went on to win nine FIM Speedway Grand Prix rounds before exiting the series in 2016 after 15 seasons on the sport’s biggest stage.

He started the last decade by finishing ninth in the 2010 series, winning the season-closing Bydgoszcz SGP to secure a permanent wild card for the following year’s competition.

And what a year it was in 2011! Despite reaching just one semi-final in the opening five rounds, AJ hit the form of his life in the second half of the season – winning three of the remaining six rounds.

He topped the box in Terenzano, Torun and Gorican, as well as taking second place in Malilla on his way to SGP World Championship silver – the highest finish of his career and the best performance by a Swede since Tony Rickardsson won his sixth world title in 2006.

Jonsson scored 89 of his 125 points over the final six rounds. Had he replicated such form over the first half of the season, there’s no doubt he would have been crowned world champion.

AJ finished ninth in SGP 2012, but gained automatic qualification for the following season after Jason Crump in sixth place announced his retirement.

He struggled to 13th in 2013, but hit back with sixth spot in 2014, making a late surge up the standings after winning the Nordic SGP at Vojens.

After finishing 10th in 2015 and 14th in an injury-interrupted 2016 season, AJ exited the World Championship, before making his final appearance as a wild card in the 2018 Swedish SGP on boyhood track Hallstavik, finishing marginally short of the semi-finals on seven points.

There’s no doubt AJ goes down as an SGP stalwart after a decade and a half on the world stage. With three FIM Speedway World Cup wins, a World Under-21 title and seven Swedish Championships to his name, Jonsson will undoubtedly be remembered as one of his country’s finest.
