POLISH AND BRITISH SEASONS PUSHED BACK

The Polish and British league seasons have both been pushed back further due to concerns over the coronavirus epidemic.

The Polish and British league seasons have both been pushed back further due to concerns over the coronavirus epidemic.

The PGE Ekstraliga has announced no matches will take place in Poland until May, while it's deemed unlikely meetings will take place in Britain’s three leagues until June 15.

With many British fans among the vulnerable groups currently advised to stay at home for 12 weeks by the government, BSPA bosses have opted to extend their shutdown by two months after originally suspending the season until April 15.

A BSPA statement read: “The board members of the British Speedway Promoters Ltd are continuing to monitor the situation regarding the coronavirus crisis on a regular basis.

“With the latest information from the government stating high-risk groups of people should stay at home for 12 weeks, it is unlikely that that there will be any British speedway events taking place before June 15 at least.

“The board has to consider the public, their members, riders and officials, some of which will be included in the high-risk group.

“It is the wish of the board that every effort is made to start the new season at the first available opportunity and we have members of the association continuing to provide alternative fixture dates as the situation evolves.

“The British Speedway Promoters Ltd sends their best wishes to everyone at this incredibly difficult time.”

Meanwhile a brief statement on the PGE Ekstraliga official website confirmed: “Please be advised that the PGE Ekstraliga rounds scheduled for April 2020 are cancelled. The new dates will be confirmed in a separate announcement by PGE Ekstraliga.”

The Swedish Elitserien season does not start until May 5 and Danish authorities have confirmed the Metal Speedway League will not start until April 29 at the earliest.
