MICHELSEN'S BIGGART BOOST

Danish star Mikkel Michelsen admits the support of mental coach Alun Biggart played a key part in his champagne finish to 2019.

Danish star Mikkel Michelsen admits the support of mental coach Alun Biggart played a key part in his champagne finish to 2019.

The former Glasgow Tigers owner lives close to Michelsen’s Danish workshop and offered the Rybnik-based rider a useful sounding board when things got tough last year.

Michelsen was gutted to miss out on SGP 2020 qualification at the GP Challenge in Gorican last August, but he bounced back to win Speedway European Championship gold in Chorzow.

I enjoy talking with Alun because he is so down-to-earth and easy to speak to. He makes you feel good in his company. You feel so relaxed and feel you can tell him whatever you want to tell him.

The Lublin star admits Biggart’s influence played a key role in helping him regain the form and motivation he needed to land the SEC crown.

He said: “I just felt at the end of last year – especially after the GP Challenge – that I wasn’t happy with myself. I wouldn’t say I was in a bad place, but I was very disappointed and I was having a hard time finding motivation.

“I was going to some meetings and I didn’t really care – I didn’t care whether I scored a maximum or zero. It wouldn’t make me happy. It took a toll on me.

“I contacted Alun. He has been involved with Slangerup for a few seasons. In that time, we have developed a very good relationship. I have been doing some training with him. He’s as good with physical training as he is with the mental side of things.

“I was very fortunate he had the opportunity to go with me to the last round of SEC last year.”

Michelsen says Biggart helps him find mental clarity in the chaos of speedway competition. He said: “He’s a very smart guy. He makes it so simple for you.

“Every time I go speak with him, it’s like an entire new world opens up to me about life and business.  It’s not just speedway I go and speak with him about. It could be my life in general.

“I enjoy talking with Alun because he is so down-to-earth and easy to speak to. He makes you feel good in his company. You feel so relaxed and feel you can tell him whatever you want to tell him. He’s not going to look strangely at you or say you’re stupid. He’s neutral, but he makes you feel good.”

Michelsen is currently first reserve for SGP 2020, meaning he will be the rider called upon if any of the 15 regulars are forced to miss meetings due to injury, illness or other reasons.

With German ace Martin Smolinski currently sidelined with a hip injury, Michelsen could find himself thrust into action if called upon by the FIM when the series gets underway.

If the opportunity comes his way, Michelsen hopes Biggart will be on hand to support him in the pits.

He said: “I was talking with him in the winter and for the important meetings like SEC rounds, SGP rounds or whatever, I asked whether it would be possible for him to come with me.

“It all depends on his kids. They play badminton at a very high level and they are very talented. Obviously family comes first. But I hope he has time.”
