Polish president Andrzej Duda hailed FIM Speedway Grand Prix world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik “for representing Poland so beautifully” after visiting his workshop on Friday.
Zmarzlik became Poland’s third world champion in Torun last October, fending off Leon Madsen in an epic race for the sport’s biggest prize.
And just hours after returning to practice ahead of the PGE Ekstraliga season, the Gorzow hero skipped a team barbeque to host President Duda at his workshop in Kinice.
Zmarzlik talked Poland’s head of state through the finer points of speedway and President Duda paid tribute to a man who was named Poland’s Athlete of the Year ahead of Bayern Munich football icon Robert Lewandowski.
Posting on Twitter, President Duda wrote: “In Kinice, the hometown of our world speedway champion Bartosz Zmarzlik, at the Zmarzlik workshop, receiving a lecture on the design of the motorcycle and the secrets of the master's successes. Thank you for representing Poland so beautifully! Pride!”
President Duda’s visit came on the day PGE Ekstraliga clubs opened their tracks to riders for practice sessions for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown in March.
There are also reports clubs will get the green light to host matches with fans inside stadiums – potentially from June 19 – with attendances capped at 25 percent of a stadium’s capacity to allow for effective social distancing.
