EKSTRALIGA | MADSEN BACK TO HIS BEST

World No.2 Leon Madsen raced to an heroic 14 paid 15-point maximum just two days after back surgery as Czestochowa romped to a 53-37 win.

World No.2 Leon Madsen raced to an heroic 14 paid 15-point maximum just two days after back surgery as Czestochowa romped to a 53-37 PGE Ekstraliga victory over Wroclaw on Sunday.

Madsen has been dogged by disc problems for the past year and underwent another operation in Bydgoszcz on Friday in a bid to ease the pain. But it didn’t stop him from roaring to a glorious performance for the Lions as they eased past a side likely to be in title contention.

He was well supported by 10 paid 11 from 2017 world champion Jason Doyle, 10 from Pawel Przedpelski and seven paid eight from Freddie Lindgren.

Polish star Maciej Janowski was Wroclaw’s top scorer on 11, while Gleb Chugunov maintained his strong start to the year with 10 points.

Triple world champion Tai Woffinden tallied eight, but it was a tough day for SGP newcomer Max Fricke and Dan Bewley, who both failed to score from two rides. They could face a fight for their team places in the coming weeks, with 2012 world champion Chris Holder said to be joining as a guest.

In the day’s other meeting, a fantastic 13 paid 14 points from the in-form Robert Lambert inspired Rybnik to their first win of 2020, as they saw off likely relegation rivals Gorzow 46-44.

The GB ace is proving a real trump card for the newly-promoted side in the No.8 berth, racing to four victories on an impressive afternoon. Vaclav Milik, Sergey Logachev and Kacper Woryna all contributed eight apiece towards the Rybnik total.

Gorzow’s efforts were boosted by a 14 paid 15-point maximum from world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik, who kept his side in contention. Krzysztof Kasprzak notched nine and Anders Thomsen added eight.

But it was a baptism of fire for Danish star Niels-Kristian Iversen on his racing return from a shoulder injury. He scored one point from three outings.
