NICHOLLS SURPRISED BY PANTHERS OFFER

Scott Nicholls was shocked when Panthers handed him a recall, admitting “I asked them if they actually watched me around there last year."

Peterborough star Scott Nicholls admits he was shocked when Panthers handed him a recall for 2020, admitting “I asked them if they actually watched me around there last year!”

The seven-time British champion has made no secret of the fact he prefers the nation’s smaller and more technical tracks to bigger, faster circuits. His greensheet average around the East of England Showground was 4.47 points in 2019, compared to his away figure of 5.86.

That didn’t stop Panthers bringing him back for another season and the former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star is determined to repay their faith.

As long as I keep enjoying it and get the buzz with a team, I’ll keep going. I’m not setting myself any massive targets, but it would be nice to win another league title.

He said: “When they called me and asked me to ride for them again this year, I asked them if they actually watched me around there last year!

“I had a tough time around Peterborough. I was struggling for speed and it’s quite apparent now I had things going on personally which made things pretty tough. The harder I tried around Peterborough, the harder it got.

“But I know I can get around there. I’ve had some good performances around Peterborough and 2019 is put to bed. I know what to expect when we can get racing and I’m looking forward to it.”

Nicholls lifted the SGB Championship title with Leicester last season and has now won four league titles in the UK.

The Kent Kings doubling-up man would love to make it five and has no immediate plans to hang up his kevlars at the age of 42.

He said: “As long as I keep enjoying it and get the buzz with a team, I’ll keep going. I’m not setting myself any massive targets, but it would be nice to win another league title with a team.

“The key factor for me is all about enjoying it and that’s what I’ll continue to do. I’m not ready to finish just yet.”
