Swedish star Peter Ljung has been taken to hospital following an horrific crash at his side’s Swedish Elitserien opener in Vetlanda on Tuesday.

The former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star, who races for Vetlanda, clashed with Dackarna’s top-flight debutant Avon van Dyck in heat 11.

Van Dyck appeared to be attempting a cutback just as Ljung moved wide on lap two, turn two and their collision sent Ljung straight, with man and machine catapulting over the fence and the rider striking a floodlight pole.

Reports from trackside confirm Ljung was conscious, moving and talking following the incident. He was loaded on to a spinal board and taken to hospital, accompanied by his wife.

After a lengthy delay, Vetlanda sealed victory 46-44 with Aussie star Brady Kurtz topping the hosts’ scorechart on 13 paid 14, while Ljung added eight.

Skipper Hans Andersen, Swedish champion Jacob Thorssell and Oliver Berntzon scored 10 paid 11 each for Dackarna.

Elsewhere, Lejonen started their season in fine style as European champion Robert Lambert bagged 12 points to lead them to a 58-32 win at home to Masarna.

The Brit was unbeaten over four rides, with Rohan Tungate and Adrian Gala adding 10 paid 12. Nicolai Klindt notched 10.

Kim Nilsson topped Masarna’s scorechart on 10, with SGP star Antonio Lindback adding nine paid 10.

Swedish star Jonas Davidsson roared to a 14 paid 15-point maximum for Piraterna as they thumped Vastervik 53-37. He was well supported by 13 paid 14 from both Peter Kildemand and Britain’s Adam Ellis. Mads Hansen led the Vastervik scorechart on 10 paid 11.

In the day’s other meeting, SGP reserve Pontus Aspgren raced to a 15-point maximum for Indianerna, while Max Fricke added 11. But it wasn’t enough to save the Kumla team from a 49-41 loss at home to Rospiggarna.

Kenneth Hansen raced to 10 paid 13 for the visitors, with Kai Huckenbeck collecting 10 paid 11 and Rasmus Jensen and Tomas H Jonasson notching nine paid 10 apiece. Timo Lahti tallied nine.
