World champion Bartosz Zmarzlik laid down a marker for his SGP 2020 rivals by retaining the PGE International Ekstraliga Riders Championship in Torun on Saturday night.

The Pole had to be at his best to overhaul Motoarena track specialist Jason Doyle in the final, with JD’s Czestochowa team mate Leon Madsen third and Zielona Gora ace Patryk Dudek fourth.

Zmarzlik topped the heat scorechart on 14 points, beaten only by Russian rocket Emil Sayfutdinov in heat seven.

This saw him qualify automatically for the final alongside Doyle, who tallied 12, beating Maciej Janowski on countback with three heat wins to the Wroclaw racer’s two.

Madsen got the better of Janowski in the first semi-final to reach the last four, with Leszno’s Piotr Pawlicki third and Lublin’s Matej Zagar failing to finish.

Dudek won the second semi ahead of triple world champion Tai Woffinden, local favourite Pawel Przedpelski and Sayfutdinov.

Woffy bagged 11 points in the heats, with Dudek tallying 10. Zagar notched eight, while Madsen only managed seven before producing the goods in the semis to put himself in the hunt for victory.

Przedpelski also scored seven, while Sayfutdinov picked up six, pipping SGP first reserve Mikkel Michelsen into the semis on countback after they tied.

Russian racer Artem Laguta and Slovak star Martin Vaculik both missed the cut on five points, while Freddie Lindgren registered four.
