Double world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik is in the race to be crowned Polish Athlete of the Year for the second straight season tonight.
Zmarzlik became only the second speedway rider to win the Przeglad Sportowy poll – Poland’s equivalent of Sports Personality of the Year – for 2019, following in the footsteps of 1999 winner Tomasz Gollob.
He beat Bayern Munich football icon Robert Lewandowski to the prize, but needs the backing of speedway fans across Poland once again to ensure that he retains the title for 2020.
After online votes from fans have been counted, the top 10 athletes will enter tonight’s SMS vote. Tune into the 86th Przeglad Sportowy Plebiscite live on Polsat and Polsat Sport from 20:00 CET to follow the ceremony and for more details of how to back Bartek.
The Gorzow icon became only the third rider in FIM Speedway Grand Prix history to win back-to-back world titles, following in the footsteps of Tony Rickardsson and Nicki Pedersen. He also became the first Polish rider to win multiple speedway world titles.
SGP 2021 sees Zmarzlik bid to become the first rider in SGP history to win three world championships on the bounce and the second of all time to complete the sport’s ultimate hat-trick – only previously achieved by Kiwi legend Ivan Mauger between 1968 and 1970.
As well as winning speedway’s biggest prize and four SGP rounds along the way, Zmarzlik also led Gorzow to last season’s PGE Ekstraliga play-off final and claimed the Polish Golden Helmet.
Back Bartek tonight as he bids to write more history for the shale sport – tune in and vote for the world champ!
