World champion Bartosz Zmarzlik hailed his fans after taking fifth place in this year’s Polish Athlete of the Year poll on Saturday night.

Zmarzlik won the Przeglad Sportowy-backed prize last year following his 2019 FIM Speedway Grand Prix title triumph, but missed out this year despite becoming the first Polish rider in history to become a double world champion.

Bayern Munich footballer Robert Lewandowski topped the vote after a sensational season with the German club, which saw him lift the UEFA Champions League trophy, Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal.

French Open women’s champion Iga Swiatek was second after making history as Poland’s first-ever tennis Grand Slam winner. Ski jumping star Kamil Stoch was third and rally driver Kajetan Kajetanowicz was fourth.

Zmarzlik’s bid to win the award for a second straight year was heavily backed by fans in Poland and beyond, and the rider paid tribute to everyone who got behind him.

He told Przeglad Sportowy: “I am very happy to be in this beautiful place. Thank you very much to everyone who cast votes for me. This shows me that the work I do, the sport I do, appeals to the fans. I want to thank my parents, fiancée, sponsors and members of my team for their support.”
