German racer Martin Smolinski has undergone further hip surgery to fix metalwork inserted after his 2020 crash.
The former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star suffered a badly fractured right hip and nerve damage in a training crash in Leipzig last May.
His recovery suffered a setback when X-rays taken at a regular check-up revealed the plate supporting the hip had moved, forcing him to go under the knife in Leipzig on Tuesday.
Smolinski was due to take part in a training camp in Italy, but the operation forced him to scrap those plans.
But the former World Longtrack champion is determined that the work will not slow his preparations to return to action this spring.
He told his official website: “As soon as it starts again, I want to be back at my full performance level as before the fall and start the season at 110 percent.”
Smolinski is set to race for Bavarian club Landshut as they join the Polish Second Division for this year – pledging to race with or without crowds. He will also line up for Bauhaus Elitserien side Masarna in Sweden.
