ELLIS SEEKING SHEFFIELD SILVERWARE

Sheffield star Adam Ellis admits his SGB Premiership title success with Swindon has made him hungry for more silverware at Owlerton.

Sheffield star Adam Ellis admits his SGB Premiership title success with Swindon has made him hungry for more silverware at Owlerton.

The Great Britain racer made the switch to the Tigers after Robins withdrew from the league due to pandemic concerns and planned building work at their Blunsdon base.

He’s joined in Tigers colours by fellow Swindon 2019 hero Troy Batchelor, Jack Holder, Kyle Howarth, Justin Sedgmen, Josh Bates and James Wright.

It would be nice to win the league again after winning it in 2019, and with Batch being there as well, I think we can help Sheffield have a good chance.

Adam Ellis

Ellis helped the Robins to two championships in three seasons, with the first coming in 2017 - the same year Sheffield claimed the SGB Championship crown. The Piraterna star also helped Swindon to the first league and cup double in the club’s history in 2019.

Now he’s keen to bring that success to Sheffield as the Yorkshire outfit makes its long-awaited move into British speedway’s top flight.

He said: “Obviously it’s their first year in the top league and they’re keen to do well – they’ve shown that with the side they’ve put together. They’ve built a team that can fight for the title and wherever you race you want to be fighting to win the league.

“It would be nice to win the league again after winning it in 2019, and with Batch being there as well, I think we can help Sheffield have a good chance.

“Once you’ve gone through that feeling of winning the league, of course you always want to feel it again sooner rather than later.

“Sheffield won the Championship not so long back and a few of the other boys in the team know what it’s like to win things as well. So I think that could be important for us and hopefully we can use that to our advantage.”

Ellis feared he wouldn’t find an SGB Premiership team place once Swindon pulled the plug for 2021 and expected to continue his career abroad. So he’s delighted to have been drafted in by the Tigers.

He added: “I’m really pleased to be racing in the UK with Sheffield – I didn’t really see where else I could fit in at first and I was just going to focus on my racing abroad.

“I had a few calls from a couple of clubs, but Steady (Simon Stead – Sheffield team manager) was very persistent shall we say. It was frustrating at first, but you could tell he was genuinely excited and you do kind of want to be wanted don’t you?

“They’ve brought me in to do a job and I want to perform to the best of my ability week in and week out for them.”
