FIM Speedway Grand Prix star Anders Thomsen is a double Danish champion after retaining his national crown in Vojens on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old produced a sublime performance in the heats, powering to a 15-point maximum to book his place in the Grand Final.

Thomsen suffered his first defeat of the night to triple world champion Nicki Pedersen in the race, finishing second. But with those two points added to his fab 15, he kept the crown on 17, forcing Pedersen to make do with the silver medal after he scored 12 in his first five rides to total 15.

World No.5 Leon Madsen claimed third place in the final to end up with bronze on 14. He finished second on the heat scorechart with 13.

Former champion Kenneth Bjerre took fourth place in the final, having made the cut on 11 points.

Last year’s runner-up Nicolai Klindt fell just short of qualification on 10, with a bike failure in race 16 cruelly dashing his final hopes.

Former SGP rider Mikkel Michelsen was sixth on nine points, with young gun Mads Hansen impressing on eight.
