RIP ANDREI SAVIN

Russia’s first world championship-winning team manager Andrei Savin has died.

31 / 12 / 2019, 19:01

Russia’s first world championship-winning team manager Andrei Savin has died.

World No.3 Emil Sayfutdinov confirmed the news on his official Facebook page this afternoon.

Posting on Facebook, Sayfutdinov wrote: “After long battle, our Russian speedway team manager Andrei Savin has passed away. Our thoughts are with all his family and friends ... Rest in peace my friend.”

Savin – a former FIM referee – first took charge of the side in 2015, leading Russia to FIM Speedway World Cup bronze at Leszno in 2017.

He then led the side one last time for the inaugural Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations in 2018, guiding them to victory at Race Off 1 in Teterow, before inspiring Emil Sayfutdinov, Artem Laguta and Gleb Chugunov to an historic title win in the Final at Wroclaw’s Olympic Stadium.

It was Russia’s first senior speedway world title of any kind on the shale after years of dominance in ice speedway events.

The team went on to retain their Monster Energy SON crown on home soil at the 2019 Final in Togliatti in July, where Savin didn’t serve as team manager, but was a member of the FIM Jury for the weekend.

SpeedwayGP.com sends its condolences to Andrei’s family and friends at this sad time.
