CHUGUNOV TO REPRESENT POLAND

Russian racer Gleb Chugunov has handed Wroclaw and Poland a huge boost as he starts the PGE Ekstraliga season on a Polish licence.

Russian racer Gleb Chugunov has handed Wroclaw and Poland a huge boost as he starts the PGE Ekstraliga season on a Polish licence.

The double Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations world champion recently gained a Polish passport, joining Emil Sayfutdinov and Artem Laguta as a Russo-Polish citizen.

With double World Under-21 champion Maksym Drabik facing a possible suspension for breaching anti-doping rules, Wroclaw could have been missing a second home senior rider to race alongside Maciej Janowski.

But with Chugunov now on a PZM licence, he could fill that spot, or potentially line-up at No.6 or No.7 in his final year as a junior, with another Pole joining Magic in the top five. If Drabik is available, Chugunov’s presence at reserve could render Wroclaw huge title favourites.

Posting on Instagram after switching from a Russian licence, Chugunov also suggested he may change colours at international level, as he is now eligible to compete for Poland.

He wrote: “Dear fans, I inform you that from this season I will represent Poland at all international competitions. Thank you for everything; I hope that people who sincerely supported me will continue to cheer.”

If Chugunov is selected by Poland for the World Under-21 Championship, he would start as one of the favourites, although he faces stiff competition from Leszno star Dominik Kubera.

Chugunov is eligible to compete for Poland or Russia in the Monster Energy SON as he holds both passports. If he were to switch sides from his home country, it would strengthen an already-powerful Polish squad seeking its first gold medal under the new format.
